Headaches/ Migraines
Common Types of Headaches We See
Tension Headaches
Tension headaches are the most common type of headache and are often associated with:
-
Tight neck and shoulder muscles
-
Poor posture
-
Stress
-
Long hours at a computer
-
Jaw clenching or teeth grinding
Symptoms often include:
-
Dull, aching pain
-
Tightness around the forehead
-
Tenderness in the neck, shoulders, or scalp
Cervicogenic Headaches
Many people don't realize that headaches can actually originate from the neck. These are called cervicogenic headaches and are commonly caused by irritation of the joints, muscles, or nerves in the cervical spine. They often begin in the neck and radiate to one side of the head.
Symptoms may include:
-
Pain starting at the base of the skull
-
Neck stiffness
-
Reduced neck movement
-
Pain behind one eye
-
Headaches triggered by neck movement or prolonged posture
Migraines
Migraines are a neurological condition that may include:
-
Moderate to severe throbbing pain
-
Nausea
-
Vomiting
-
Sensitivity to light or sound
-
Visual disturbances (auras)
While chiropractic care is not a cure for migraines, some individuals with migraines—especially those who also have neck pain or reduced cervical mobility—may benefit from conservative care as part of an overall treatment plan. Research suggests manual therapies may help reduce migraine frequency or intensity in some patients, though results vary.
